The Farmers’ Market, inaugurated in 1940, presents its own architecture of the Estado Novo, in an environment of upheave and joy.
The Farmers’ Market in the centre of Funchal was inaugurated on November 24, 1940. This project by Edmundo Tavares (1892-1983), presents the architecture of the Estado Novo, and reflects the intention to make it the great supply hub of the city.
Large panels of tiles of faiança Batisttini de Maria de Portugal, dating from 1940 and painted with regional themes, by João Rodrigues, adorn the façade, the main door and the fishmonger.
