This garden is one of the most visited in Madeira Island.
But due to its horography, its interior is not easily accessible.
It is possible to visit this garden using an off road wheelchair for your comfort.
Monte Palace Madeira’s garden covers an area of 70,000 m2 and contains a rich collection of exotic plants from the four corners of the world, swans and ducks that inhabit the central pond, peacocks and chickens that roam freely in the garden.
In the garden’s central pond, visitors can also admire the beauty and majesty of the swans.
As a natural environment, these delightful animals prefer relatively shallow ponds and lakes.
Although they can now be admired in gardens around the world, black swans are native to Australia, Tasmania and New Zealand, and wild (white) swans are native to Iceland and Scandinavia.
The Monte Palace Madeira Museum is an exhibition space with three galleries.
Two are splendid with sculptures, and the other houses a collection of minerals from the four corners of the world.
The exhibition entitled “African Passion” presents part of Zimbabwe’s contemporary sculpture collection from 1966 to 1969.
More than 1,000 sculptures are displayed on two floors of the museum, one corresponding to an individual presentation by the artists and the other to recreate the environment in which these pieces were originally created and displayed.
“Mother Nature’s Secret” is part of a collection of minerals originating mainly from Brazil, Portugal, South Africa, Zambia, Peru, Argentina and North America.
In this exhibition, there are about 700 samples arranged in cavities that try to simulate the mineral-forming environment in the depths of our planet.
Others are “suspended”, giving the sensation of planetary space where rock masses gravitate freely.
There is also a gem exhibition gallery with special emphasis on diamonds.
One of the most interesting features of the garden of Monte Palace Madeira is the existence of a large set of tile panels located along the walkways.
Acquired by José Berardo under the guidance of specialist Manuel Leitão, this collection is considered one of the largest and richest in the country after the National Tile Museum, which brings together Hispano-Moorish examples from the 17th and 19th centuries. XV and XVI centuries to contemporary panels.
The examples on display represent decorations used at different times.
They come from palaces, churches, chapels, residences in various parts of Portugal and portray religious, social and cultural events that were remarkable and unavoidable references in our history at that time.
