Fajã dos Padres is a unique territory on the south coast of Madeira, marked by a rare combination of historical, agricultural, and scenic value.
Formed by an ancient rocky outcrop that created a fertile platform between the sea and a cliff of about three hundred meters, this space has become, over the centuries, a remarkable example of human resilience and heritage preservation.
From the end of the 16th century, the fajã was administered by Jesuit priests, who gave it its name and developed a benchmark agricultural activity, notably the production of Malvasia Cândida, one of the most emblematic wines in the history of Madeira wine.
After the expulsion of the Society of Jesus, the property passed through different owners, facing periods of transformation and challenges related to viticulture.
In the 20th century, the fajã came into the hands of the Jardim Fernandes family, who recovered agricultural traditions, preserved the last original Malvasia Cândida vine, and consolidated a sustainable project that values the authenticity of the territory.
Today, Fajã dos Padres is accessible via a panoramic cable car and integrates diversified agricultural production, restored historical accommodations, and an ongoing commitment to the conservation of the landscape and cultural memory.
It is recognized as a benchmark in promoting Madeiran identity, where nature, history, and tradition are maintained in exemplary balance.
